Why are stories of explorers and test pilots so captivating if we aren't going to climb the Eiger or go into space? For that matter, why do people fixate on how Google runs their systems if they won't ever have even a tiny fraction as much data?

The fact is, there are lessons to learn on the edge of the impossible. Even if you don't have hundreds of petabytes across hundreds of data centers, there are lessons to be learned from systems running extreme scale and speed.
